How Autopay Works for Your Tenants

Understand how automatic rent collection works when tenants enable autopay.

1

Tenant enables autopay from their portal

From the tenant’s Rent & Payments page, they click Enable Autopay. They review and accept a fee consent checkbox, select their saved payment method (card or bank account), and confirm.

2

Rent is charged automatically on the due date

On each rent due date, LeaseBase creates a payment using the tenant’s saved payment method. The charge amount plus processing fee is charged automatically. No action is needed from you or the tenant.

3

You see the payment in your dashboard

The charge status updates to PAID in your Payments section. You receive a notification that rent was collected. The payment appears in the tenant’s Payment History with a receipt.

4

What happens if autopay fails

If the tenant’s card is declined or expired, the charge stays PENDING (not PAID). The tenant is notified of the failed payment and can retry manually from their Pay Now button. The failed attempt is logged.

Common questions

Can tenants disable autopay?

Yes. Tenants can disable autopay at any time from their Rent & Payments page by clicking the Disable button. The next month’s rent will need to be paid manually.

What payment method is used for autopay?

Autopay uses whichever card or bank account the tenant has saved and selected for automatic payments in their portal.

Is there a retry if autopay fails?

If the first attempt fails, a retry is scheduled per the retry policy. The tenant is notified immediately so they can also pay manually if needed.
